#MakingTime A Day in the Life of a Manager Back From Maternity Leave
MakingTime A Day in the Life of a Manager Back From Maternity Leave As most women whove had children will tell you, transitioning back into work from maternity leave is often anything but seamless. Between days spent catching up on an avalanche of unanswered schmelzglass and nights characterized by little sleep and a lot of baby rocking, to call this transitional time hectic would be an understatement. The key to nailing this transition as smoothly as one possibly can? Working for an employer that actually cares about supporting new moms and families. Certainly, Aine Abruscati has found that to be true of her time at OnDeck. In 2016, she joined OnDeck as its Senior Manager of Communications Culture while five months pregnant with her first child, and today, shes recently returned to work from maternity leave with baby number two.OnDeck is hiring See opportunitiesWith the support of OnDeck behind her, Abruscati and her family have been acclimating to their new life pace and everything it entails on both the work and home fronts. She gave Fairygodboss a glimpse into what, for one day, that pace looks like, and her best tips for getting it all done.--Who Aine AbruscatiWhat Senior Manager of Communications Culture at OnDeckWhere New York, New York--230 a.m.My fur-and-a-half month old wakes up and refuses to be put down in the crib. He woke up two hours ago and had a bottle, so I know he is not hungry. After countless efforts, I end up sitting in the chair in his room until 400 a.m. when I successfully put him down and go back to my bed for a little more slumber.530amMy alarm goes off. I hit snooze twice and manage to get out of bed 20 minutes later. I shower, plug in the percolator, open the shades in the house, and attempt to look like a presentable human being with the aid of a lot of makeup and hair products. My goal is to finish getting ready by 630 a.m. so my husband can get in the shower and be finished by the time were ready for breakfast, since its the onl y meal during the week during which we eat altogether.650 a.m.My two year old wakes up. I let him watch a few videos of himself on my phone while I change the babys diaper and get his bottle ready. Then we all head into the kitchen where I get my toddler his Danimals monkey yoghurt and we watch Sesame Street in the living room.715 a.m.While my toddler dances to the Letter of the Day and the baby tries to roll on his side on the mat, I gulp down coffee, get everyones bowl of cereal on the table (maybe with some fruit on the side if we managed to go grocery shopping) and quickly make lunch for my husband and I. Were trying to be better about bringing lunch, but we totenstill cant manage to make it the night before (which would obviously be way easier).720 a.m.Family meal time We just started the baby on solids. He hates the rice cereal (who can blame him) but its nice for all four of us to be together around the table. Im usually up and down, though, while I try to empty the dishes in the sink so its not a nightmare for the nanny who watches the baby, lay out my toddlers clothes for daycare, and grab my shoe from my room. (Yes, thats singular I fractured two toes while walking into my kitchen wall the last week of my maternity leave, so my right foot is in the most fashion-forward space boot you can imagine.)740 a.m.I kiss everyone goodbye as I dash out the door. Its a 10-minute drive to the train station if I manage to avoid red lights, which never happens. Parking is a nightmare, so I usually spend five minutes looking for a spot, and then I have 10-minute walk to the platform.807 a.m.I do my best to catch the earlier trains, but this is usually the one I make. While I hate the commute, this is my alone time. I read my New York Times (I get it delivered daily and Ill never change) and catch up on email, texts, etc. I also make koranvers to look at my calendar so I can best prepare for the day including any discussions I need to facilitate or presentations I n eed to revise (or create) last minute.905 a.m.At my desk and raring to go. Its a meeting-lite day for me and my first call isnt until 1130 a.m., so I revise copy for several internal communications, have a cup of coffee with some peanut butter on the side, and work on designing our Inclusion roadmap for 2019, which includes speaking with potential partners.1130 a.m.Monthly check-in call with Fairygodboss1200 p.m.One of my closest friends who I havent seen in four years is in town for a business trip and she has 30 minutes to catch up over coffee today. I go to Maison Kayser (because this seems as good an excuse as any), grab two lattes and a pain aux raison, and meet her in Bryant Park where we embrace for five minutes and talk for 25 about our lives.115 p.m.Return to the office, scarf down my salad, and take a couple of meetings around upcoming sponsorship opportunities for our Denver team, which is expected to grow by 15 percent within the next five months one with Women Who Code and the other with Make-a-Wish Foundation. One of the things I love about OnDeck is the passion our team members have for community. Whether its creating networking, learning or philanthropic giving opportunities, we are always switched on.330 p.m.Part of my job is focused on content management for our employer brand. OnDeck recently surpassed $10 billion in lending to small businesses a huge win for our company and our customers I spend some time making content updates to platforms like our Careers site and LinkedIn profile to reflect this milestone.400 p.m.Even though Im at my coffee threshold for the day, I catch up with the new coordinator on my team to see how she is settling in at the company, learn about her interests and career aspirations, and just connect. I am guilty of rescheduling these types of meetings, especially on Mondays when Im cranky and tired, but they are so important speaking from my own experience, it feels good when colleagues take time to invest in you and your personal relationships. And then it becomes contagious.500 p.m.If my meetings are finished and I have wrapped up any pressing work, I try to leave at 5 p.m. so I get to spend an hour with the kids before they go to sleep. Im so fortunate to work with a team that challenges me and holds me accountable but also allows me to be with my family when I need. Tonight I catch the 517 p.m. train and finish some email before falling asleep with my mouth open on the train.630pmI walk in the door and my house is a disaster But my sons are in good form. I am so fortunate to have an incredibly supportive family and my parents, who live two minutes away, are a huge part of our lives. They take care of the kids in the late afternoon until my husband and I get home. The baby is fed and bathed, and my toddler is fed and ready for dancing My husband walks in shortly after me and we hear about everyones day. My parents leave, my husband takes the baby and gives him a bottle while I get my todd lers bath ready.710 p.m.Once bath time is done and my son is in pajamas, we all read a few books together before we go our separate ways. We breed horrible sleepers, so my husband stays with my toddler until he falls asleep in his room and I rock and sing the baby to sleep in his room.740 p.m.Im ready to collapse but of course this is where the evening begins My husband and I just started a new routine several weeks ago where one of us goes to the gym while the other person tidies up and cooks dinner, and then we alternate the next night. But were both pooped and neither of us wants to exercise. We change out of our work clothes, divide and conquer putting toys away and washing bottles, and then whip together a big salad to complement the loaf of brioche that we shove in our mouths while we clean.830 p.m.We usually sit in the kitchen for dinner, without our phones, and talk (or grunt depending on how tired we are) but the Emmy awards are on tonight and I want to watch so we sit in t he living room and chat about our day during commercials.1000 p.m.We both decide to call it a night so we set up the coffee, shut off the lights and head to bedjust in time to hear my toddler waking up from a bad dream. I head into his room to reassure him everything is OK and then make it to my bed. I would love to say I wrote in my journal or read one of the five books gathering dust on my nightstand, but instead I check email and news headlines before I fall asleep while holding my phone.--Fairygodboss is proud to partner with OnDeck. One resume to rule them all
One resume to rule them allOne resume to rule them allIf I ripped off the top third of your resume and handed it to a complete strangerwould they be able to tell me what you wanted to do with the rest of your life?If the answer is no, then you should consider updating your resume strategy. You see, the top 1/3 of your resume should be a professional summary that expresses quickly and succinctly what youre looking to do next by showcasing the abilities that will get you there.HR professionals, hiring managers, executive recruiters theyre all pressed for time these days and they cant try to guess what youre looking for.A professional summary at the top of your resume lists the relevant accomplishments, qualifications and proficiencies for the job you would like to get, and is an important part of helping people understand you and what role they should consider hiring you for.The biggest temptation is to list all your past accomplishments. Avoid it.Nobody wants to read your ingredients l abel - the comprehensive listing of everything and anything that you contain.Would you market Coke Zero by putting Phosphoric Acid, Potassium Benzoate and Potassium Citrate in the same size font on the label as great Coke taste, zero calories? No, because youd want to emphasize the most important things, rather than distract people with irrelevant information. So dont make it tough on your audience. Use the top-third of your resume to list the skills, capabilities and talents relevant to your next job.You also need to stick to just one resume. This has been the best advice for a long time, but its even more so in our digitally-connected social media world.I know all the arguments for multiple resumes. You want to tailor each to the position. You want to target a particular firm. You want to emphasize this here and that there. My experience over the brde decade suggestsTheyre not paying that much attention. As our own research has shown, small changes in word emphasis are lost on the typical resume reviewer. They spend 6 seconds doing a first review of your resume. Get the big picture right, and good things follow. Waste time wordsmithing and youll frustrate yourself.Youre not that good of a writer. Perhaps a great writer could communicate these subtle nuances, if she had enough experience with the audience, the material, and the intended effect. That great writer is probably not you. Focus your efforts on where you can make the most impact.Even if you are a good writer, youre too close to yourself, and too far from understanding the market for professionals like you, to craft the right message. Your target audience has reviewed dozens of resumes for this very position. As a result, your audience has a much more nuanced and subtle feel for what the market looks like and which experiences and backgrounds are big advantages. Its simply unlikely that even a great writer will guess correctly what each particular reviewer wants to see most. You are far better off get ting a single resume mostly rightand investing the rest of your job-search time elsewhere. And finally, your online presence needs to back up your paper resume and be consistent with your offline job goals.Youve got social network profiles, results about you that show up in Google searches, and a social media presence that looks the same to your audience regardless of which resume you give them. It is important that your online and offline presences provide one consistent story. If the two look dissimilar, or, even worse, conflict in small or important ways, you set yourself apart as an unserious, or potentially untruthful, candidate. Nothing will get you not hired faster than untruths. It is highly unlikely that youre a skillful enough writer and editor to make one social presence support two or more competing resumes. So you need to have one resume. One presence, one theme, one summary, one coherent career goalOne resume to rule them all.Have a great week

Recommendations for Dealing with a PIP
Recommendations for Dealing with a PIPRecommendations for Dealing with a PIPI was previously on aperformance improvement plan (PIP)and just yesterday was given 90 days to improve or be fired. Honestly, I love my work however my boss has a low perception of me and I dont feel the situation is mendable. Still getting over it... I have a masters and BS in engineering so I am 70% sure that I can find a new job, but I had a question about severance. Do you think I should hold out for the severance pay and is there going to be any? Or, should I quit now because Im totally over it and a little concerned how future employers will see it? Human Resources Response What do you stand to gain by quitting now? You wont be eligible for unemployment. You wont have a paycheck while you look for a new job. And,having a resignationwithout a new job lined upwont make job hunting any easier. Any recruiter or hiring manager who isnt as dumb as a rock (admittedly, some are dumb as rocks), will say, Why did you leave your job without a new one lined up? And, since they will call your former employer for a reference, theyll find out the truth. So you better tell them the truth anyway. In other words, quitting only solves your own emotional herausforderungs about having to deal with a boss who has a low perception of you.Granted, a boss who doesnt think youre capable of performing can make performing difficult, but difficult is bedrngnis the same thing as impossible. Heres my recommendation Stay in the job, actively look for a new one, and actively try to meet the conditions of the PIP. Because your company has a formal PIP program, its highly unlikely that your boss will be able to make the decision to terminate you all on her own. How to Deal with a PIP Heres how you tackle a PIP See the PIP as a blessing. Its not often that a boss will spell out exactly what she expects of you. A PIP takes all the guesswork out of it. Your boss has written down all of her expectations. If you m eet those, its highly unlikely that theyll fire you. You may not want to work thereanymore, regardless, but at least youll have a job while youre looking. Create a spreadsheet with everything you need to do.Take your document and open up Excel. In one column list every single expectation from the PIP. Across the top, list each week of the PIP period. Each week, write down what you did towards that goal, along with the date and time you did it. With few exceptions, you should have something in every square every week. For instance, if one of your PIP goals is to sell $10,000 worth of product every month, write down each week how much you did sell If one of your PIP goals is tocommunicate better with your coworkers, write down each face to face meeting you had. Record any problems solved via email. Or, if you followed up three times with Jane in accounting and she didnt get back to you, write it down. The goal here is to document everything. Communication problems are often part of PI Ps, but the boss doesnt see all of the communication you do when shes not standing there watchingyourevery move. By writing this all down, she cant deny that youre communicating. Believe your boss.So many people get defensive and dont believe the boss. I dont have a problem with my attitude Shes the one with a problem It doesnt matter if your boss is off her rocker, shesstillthe boss. So, if she says you have a problem with something, you better act as if you do. While its true that being on time or having face time isnt necessary for a lot ofexempt-leveljobs, if its important to your boss, you better make sure its important to you. Leave your house 30 minutes earlier if attendance is one of your problems. Walk across the office to talk to someone instead of sending an email if face time is important to your boss. If your attitude is labeled as a problem, ask for specific examples and then fix those things. Work isnt the place to express your individuality. Its the place where you d o what your boss says so that you get paid. Meet regularly with your boss and your spreadsheet.Bosses should want to meet with you regularly when youre on a PIP, but sometimes they forget. Make sure you schedule regular meetings if she isnt. This is absolutely critical to your success. You dont want to spend 90 days working on your communication skills by talking face to face with people only to find out that your boss really meant she wants you to work on your delivery tone when you talk with others. Yes, she should have been explicit in the PIP, but sometimes bosses arent great at communicating either. Keep HR in the loop. Its a rare company that has a PIP program that doesnt involve the HR person. Make sure you keep her in the loop as well. Work hard.Dont give up. I know its hard, but please dont give up. It will just damage your reputation further. What about Severance Pay? Severance isnt required in a situation like this. Some companies will offer it to you, but many wont. A fter all, its your performance that is the problem. So, dont hold out for severance, but do hold out for the paycheck. Remember you can keep looking for a new job even when youre on a PIP and youre not obligated to stay once you find a new job, but quitting without a new job lined up will not make your life easier. NoteTalk with your boss so that you know how long your company expects a PIP to last. Current legal advice to employers is that they not state the length of time an employee has to work on a PIP. This allows an employer to take action to fire an employee in as few as two weeks if the employer is not seeing significant progress. In your case, you need to exhibit early and significant progress.

Final Round of the ASME Student Design Competition Draws Stude... Final Round of the ASME Student Design Competition Draws Stude... Final Round of the ASME Student Design Competition Draws Student Teams from Around the WorldNov. 18, 2016 Members of the kollektiv from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo prepare to demonstrate their entry at the ASME Student Design Competition Finals in Phoenix on Nov. 13. The team went on to win first prize at the event.Twenty-one student teams from 10 countries faced off at the 2016 ASME Student Design Competition Finals, which were held earlier this week at the ASME grenzberschreitend Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition in Phoenix, Ariz. Engineering students representing universities from the United States, Mexico, the United Arab Emirates, Lebanon, Pakistan, India, Egypt, Turkey, Peru and China took part in the final round of this years competition, which asked students to design and build prototypes of a bat tery-powered, compact manufacturing system that could fire paper projectiles through the air. The competitions panel of judges assessed the entries on criteria including total distance traveled by the teams projectiles and the total measured volume of each system. Team members from the University of Central Florida set up their entry at the SDC Finals. The team won third prize at the competition. At the end of the daylong competition, which took place Nov. 13 at the Phoenix Convention Center, the team from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo emerged as the winners of the event, taking home the competitions first prize $3,000 for the members of the team, plus an additional $1,000 for the universitys ASME student section. The three-member student team from Hong Kong Polytechnic University placed second in the finals. The team received $1,000, while the teams student section received $500. Third place went to the team from the University of Central Flori da, who won a $500 prize and an additional $250 for the schools student section.Nelson Lin, one of the members of the team from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, described winning first prize at the SDC finals as surreal, adding, We didnt expect to place, especially in regionals. It was weird to come here and win. We were confident in our engineering skills, but we were also expecting really good competition. We competed against some really strong teams. We went for simplicity and elegance, and I think that paid off. Andrew Bicos (third from left), director in the Office of the CTOs Enterprise Technology Strategy group at Boeing, with California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo team members (left to right) Kota Ozawa, Nelson Lin, Eric Zhong, Max Weinstein and Kevin Marshall. Boeing sponsored the Student Design Competition.Kevin Schmaltz, Ph.D., chair of the Student Design Competition Committee and one of the judges at the finals, was pleased with the creativity the s tudent teams displayed with their entries. We had a nice variety of teams, he said. Some of them made paper airplanes and tried to fly them. Some of them just tried to fling pieces of paper. Some wadded up the paper into a tanzfest and made little paper cannonballs. Some did well, some didnt do as well as they had hoped to do. Were pleased with how the students did and we think the students were pleased with how things went.Dr. Schmaltz was also impressed with the number of teams from outside the United States competing at the finals this year. Theres a wide cross-section of universities, he said. About half of the schools that came here were from within the U.S. and the other half were from international schools. We think thats a wonderful thing to get that kind of international participation in these events. For information on the ASME Student Design Competition, including details of the 2017 SDC design challenge, visit www.asme.org/events/competitions/student-design- competition.
