One resume to rule them all

One resume to rule them allOne resume to rule them allIf I ripped off the top third of your resume and handed it to a complete strangerwould they be able to tell me what you wanted to do with the rest of your life?If the answer is no, then you should consider updating your resume strategy. You see, the top 1/3 of your resume should be a professional summary that expresses quickly and succinctly what youre looking to do next by showcasing the abilities that will get you there.HR professionals, hiring managers, executive recruiters theyre all pressed for time these days and they cant try to guess what youre looking for.A professional summary at the top of your resume lists the relevant accomplishments, qualifications and proficiencies for the job you would like to get, and is an important part of helping people understand you and what role they should consider hiring you for.The biggest temptation is to list all your past accomplishments. Avoid it.Nobody wants to read your ingredients l abel - the comprehensive listing of everything and anything that you contain.Would you market Coke Zero by putting Phosphoric Acid, Potassium Benzoate and Potassium Citrate in the same size font on the label as great Coke taste, zero calories? No, because youd want to emphasize the most important things, rather than distract people with irrelevant information. So dont make it tough on your audience. Use the top-third of your resume to list the skills, capabilities and talents relevant to your next job.You also need to stick to just one resume. This has been the best advice for a long time, but its even more so in our digitally-connected social media world.I know all the arguments for multiple resumes. You want to tailor each to the position. You want to target a particular firm. You want to emphasize this here and that there. My experience over the brde decade suggestsTheyre not paying that much attention. As our own research has shown, small changes in word emphasis are lost on the typical resume reviewer. They spend 6 seconds doing a first review of your resume. Get the big picture right, and good things follow. Waste time wordsmithing and youll frustrate yourself.Youre not that good of a writer. Perhaps a great writer could communicate these subtle nuances, if she had enough experience with the audience, the material, and the intended effect. That great writer is probably not you. Focus your efforts on where you can make the most impact.Even if you are a good writer, youre too close to yourself, and too far from understanding the market for professionals like you, to craft the right message. Your target audience has reviewed dozens of resumes for this very position. As a result, your audience has a much more nuanced and subtle feel for what the market looks like and which experiences and backgrounds are big advantages. Its simply unlikely that even a great writer will guess correctly what each particular reviewer wants to see most. You are far better off get ting a single resume mostly rightand investing the rest of your job-search time elsewhere. And finally, your online presence needs to back up your paper resume and be consistent with your offline job goals.Youve got social network profiles, results about you that show up in Google searches, and a social media presence that looks the same to your audience regardless of which resume you give them. It is important that your online and offline presences provide one consistent story. If the two look dissimilar, or, even worse, conflict in small or important ways, you set yourself apart as an unserious, or potentially untruthful, candidate. Nothing will get you not hired faster than untruths. It is highly unlikely that youre a skillful enough writer and editor to make one social presence support two or more competing resumes. So you need to have one resume. One presence, one theme, one summary, one coherent career goalOne resume to rule them all.Have a great week

Recommendations for Dealing with a PIP

Recommendations for Dealing with a PIPRecommendations for Dealing with a PIPI was previously on aperformance improvement plan (PIP)and just yesterday was given 90 days to improve or be fired. Honestly, I love my work however my boss has a low perception of me and I dont feel the situation is mendable. Still getting over it... I have a masters and BS in engineering so I am 70% sure that I can find a new job, but I had a question about severance. Do you think I should hold out for the severance pay and is there going to be any? Or, should I quit now because Im totally over it and a little concerned how future employers will see it? Human Resources Response What do you stand to gain by quitting now? You wont be eligible for unemployment. You wont have a paycheck while you look for a new job. And,having a resignationwithout a new job lined upwont make job hunting any easier. Any recruiter or hiring manager who isnt as dumb as a rock (admittedly, some are dumb as rocks), will say, Why did you leave your job without a new one lined up? And, since they will call your former employer for a reference, theyll find out the truth. So you better tell them the truth anyway. In other words, quitting only solves your own emotional herausforderungs about having to deal with a boss who has a low perception of you.Granted, a boss who doesnt think youre capable of performing can make performing difficult, but difficult is bedrngnis the same thing as impossible. Heres my recommendation Stay in the job, actively look for a new one, and actively try to meet the conditions of the PIP. Because your company has a formal PIP program, its highly unlikely that your boss will be able to make the decision to terminate you all on her own. How to Deal with a PIP Heres how you tackle a PIP See the PIP as a blessing. Its not often that a boss will spell out exactly what she expects of you. A PIP takes all the guesswork out of it. Your boss has written down all of her expectations. If you m eet those, its highly unlikely that theyll fire you. You may not want to work thereanymore, regardless, but at least youll have a job while youre looking. Create a spreadsheet with everything you need to do.Take your document and open up Excel. In one column list every single expectation from the PIP. Across the top, list each week of the PIP period. Each week, write down what you did towards that goal, along with the date and time you did it. With few exceptions, you should have something in every square every week. For instance, if one of your PIP goals is to sell $10,000 worth of product every month, write down each week how much you did sell If one of your PIP goals is tocommunicate better with your coworkers, write down each face to face meeting you had. Record any problems solved via email. Or, if you followed up three times with Jane in accounting and she didnt get back to you, write it down. The goal here is to document everything. Communication problems are often part of PI Ps, but the boss doesnt see all of the communication you do when shes not standing there watchingyourevery move. By writing this all down, she cant deny that youre communicating. Believe your boss.So many people get defensive and dont believe the boss. I dont have a problem with my attitude Shes the one with a problem It doesnt matter if your boss is off her rocker, shesstillthe boss. So, if she says you have a problem with something, you better act as if you do. While its true that being on time or having face time isnt necessary for a lot ofexempt-leveljobs, if its important to your boss, you better make sure its important to you. Leave your house 30 minutes earlier if attendance is one of your problems. Walk across the office to talk to someone instead of sending an email if face time is important to your boss. If your attitude is labeled as a problem, ask for specific examples and then fix those things. Work isnt the place to express your individuality. Its the place where you d o what your boss says so that you get paid. Meet regularly with your boss and your spreadsheet.Bosses should want to meet with you regularly when youre on a PIP, but sometimes they forget. Make sure you schedule regular meetings if she isnt. This is absolutely critical to your success. You dont want to spend 90 days working on your communication skills by talking face to face with people only to find out that your boss really meant she wants you to work on your delivery tone when you talk with others. Yes, she should have been explicit in the PIP, but sometimes bosses arent great at communicating either. Keep HR in the loop. Its a rare company that has a PIP program that doesnt involve the HR person. Make sure you keep her in the loop as well. Work hard.Dont give up. I know its hard, but please dont give up. It will just damage your reputation further. What about Severance Pay? Severance isnt required in a situation like this. Some companies will offer it to you, but many wont. A fter all, its your performance that is the problem. So, dont hold out for severance, but do hold out for the paycheck. Remember you can keep looking for a new job even when youre on a PIP and youre not obligated to stay once you find a new job, but quitting without a new job lined up will not make your life easier. NoteTalk with your boss so that you know how long your company expects a PIP to last. Current legal advice to employers is that they not state the length of time an employee has to work on a PIP. This allows an employer to take action to fire an employee in as few as two weeks if the employer is not seeing significant progress. In your case, you need to exhibit early and significant progress.

Engineering students representing universities from the United States, Mexico, the United Arab Emirates, Lebanon, Pakistan, India, Egypt, Turkey, Peru and China took part in the final round of this years competition, which asked students to design and build prototypes of a bat tery-powered, compact manufacturing system that could fire paper projectiles through the air. The competitions panel of judges assessed the entries on criteria including total distance traveled by the teams projectiles and the total measured volume of each system. Team members from the University of Central Florida set up their entry at the SDC Finals. The team won third prize at the competition. At the end of the daylong competition, which took place Nov. 13 at the Phoenix Convention Center, the team from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo emerged as the winners of the event, taking home the competitions first prize $3,000 for the members of the team, plus an additional $1,000 for the universitys ASME student section. Third place went to the team from the University of Central Flori da, who won a $500 prize and an additional $250 for the schools student section.Nelson Lin, one of the members of the team from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, described winning first prize at the SDC finals as surreal, adding, We didnt expect to place, especially in regionals. It was weird to come here and win. We were confident in our engineering skills, but we were also expecting really good competition. We competed against some really strong teams. We went for simplicity and elegance, and I think that paid off. Andrew Bicos (third from left), director in the Office of the CTOs Enterprise Technology Strategy group at Boeing, with California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo team members (left to right) Kota Ozawa, Nelson Lin, Eric Zhong, Max Weinstein and Kevin Marshall. Boeing sponsored the Student Design Competition.Kevin Schmaltz, Ph.D., chair of the Student Design Competition Committee and one of the judges at the finals, was pleased with the creativity the s tudent teams displayed with their entries. We had a nice variety of teams, he said. Some of them made paper airplanes and tried to fly them. Some of them just tried to fling pieces of paper. Some wadded up the paper into a tanzfest and made little paper cannonballs. Some did well, some didnt do as well as they had hoped to do. Were pleased with how the students did and we think the students were pleased with how things went.Dr. Schmaltz was also impressed with the number of teams from outside the United States competing at the finals this year. Theres a wide cross-section of universities, he said. About half of the schools that came here were from within the U.S. and the other half were from international schools. We think thats a wonderful thing to get that kind of international participation in these events. For information on the ASME Student Design Competition, including details of the 2017 SDC design challenge, visit www.asme.org/events/competitions/student-design- competition.

5 wrist exercises to undo your keyboard-typing damage

5 wrist exercises to undo your keyboard-typing damage5 wrist exercises to undo your keyboard-typing damageEvery day we spend typing hunched over our desks, we are inflicting damage to our delicate wrists. We may not be able to see it, but for those of us who suffer from cramping, aching hands after a long day of typing and clicking in front of a computer, we can certainly feel it. Besidespositioning your hands properly over a keyboard, one of the best treatments is remembering to stretch and move throughout the day. Here are easy exercises to relieve tension that comes from too much typing1. Open and expand your handsOne of the easiest ways to fight wrist pain is to unclench your hands from the talons your keyboard is shaping them to become.Yoga teacher Ann Swanson recommends expanding the hands and stretching your fingers. When our hands have been typing away for too long, they get in a flexed, closed position, Swanson said in a video for office yoga. To combat this, she recommends expanding and gently closing the hands a few times as you focus on feeling a sense of spaciousness.2. Reverse grip of your wristsFlexing your hands in new positions can help alleviate wrist stiffness. Jill Miller, author of, The Roll Model A Step-by-Step Guide to Erase Pain, Improve Mobility, and Live Better In Your Body, recommends laying your palms flat on a surface and then moving your hands backwards, so that your thumbs are on the outside and your pinkies are on the inside. Expand your fingers into a starfish shape to feel the stretch more as you hold this position for about ten breaths.3. Waggle and circle thumbsFor those of us who spend as much time, if not more time, on our phones as we do on our computers, this flexible thumb exercise is for you. After you have expanded your hands open, Swanson recommends circling your thumbs in any way that feels good. Try reversing directions after you finish circling in one direction for a few times. The thumbs are having an unprecedente d amount of arthritis being diagnosed nowadays, because of so much typing on smartphones, she said. Getting the thumb joint moving is very important.4. Prayer handsBring your hands together in front of your heart in a prayer position, so that your palms and fingers are against each other, Healthline recommends. To stretch your wrists, press your hands together and lower your palms towards your waistline until you feel a stretch under your forearms. You can repeat this twice more.5. Take your hands off the keyboard more oftenTo prevent repetitive strain injuries, Harvards student group on the subject recommends prevention as a key component to alleviating wrist pain. Practicing good ergonomics means learning to incorporate restful movement into your work day. Taking a break can be as simple as taking your hands off the keyboard and letting your arms droop at your sides, they recommend. Every half hour, get up from your desk and stretch to loosen your neck and shoulder muscles.

10 Creative Tips for Your Cover Letter

10 Creative Tips for Your Cover Letter10 Creative Tips for Your Cover Letter10 Creative Tips for Your Cover LetterYouve probably read dozens of articles about how to write a professional, clean cover letter. So many, in fact, that you could write one yourself. Were going to spend this article talking about how to make a creative cover letter that stands out from the pack. After all, if were all writing the same professional cover letter, none of us are considered unique.Being unique is an extremely important factor in the hiring process. Sure employers want a team player as well as a solid individual worker. But the individuality aspect of your personality is far mora important that your strength as a team worker. Employers want to know that you are special. They want to know that theres something more than cover letter tutorials and editors backing you up.So, we turn to creativity. Below are ten ways to make your cover letter attention-grabbing and interesting without going overbo ard. Well toss in an example for each one.1. Be passionate about your career. If loving to create is wrong, I dont want to be right. Im confident that the rest of the team at Sylvan feels the same way which is one of the many reasons why I think Id be a perfect fit for your next hire.Proving that the job means more to you than money is key when youre trying to impress a possible employer. You dont want to come across as someone who is generating a cookie-cutter cover letter that can apply in all fields. Be passionate about what you want to do convince your audience that this is the only career path for you. This makes for an intriguing, eye-catching cover letter. Its a bonus if youre actually passionate about your job but making those emotions obvious is the important takeaway here. Make sure to include the name of the company in your introduction, and do your best to tie in the position for which youre applying. A well-rounded intro is only good if you make it come back around.2. Be passionate about the job.I spent the vast majority of my childhood in Brooklyn, reading WSN newspapers and wishing I could be as talented as the resume writers on staff. I started writing myself. I kept that passion, and its helped shape my career from starting as a freelancer to leading a team of my own which is what led me to apply for this position at WSN.In the same way, that you need to convince your employer that you love what you do, you need to convince them that you love the company. This isnt always possible with small, upstart companies (its going to be pretty obvious what youre doing) but its absolutely possible with large, well-established companies that have been around since your teenage years. Arguing that the company had a personal impact on your life makes you a viable candidate. Your employer can make the safe assumption that youre committed to the team and that, in a way, this a dream come true for you.3. Start with an accomplishment. My previous employer u sed to poke fun of me for my inability to walk away from a tauglichkeit sale which is what led me to become the top salesperson in my division after three months on the job. Im ready for a new challenge, and thats why Ive decided to apply for this position at General RV.If youre not ready for the passionate route, trying going to the all-out impressive route. Instead of plucking at your employers heartstrings, pull at their need for quality employees. If you were the top salesman at your belastung job, mention it. If you were given a promotion about just two weeks, mention it. If you won an award, mention it.Dont be over-the-top with it. Youre just stating a casual fact about yourself. But make it obvious that youre not someone to be overlooked you have an awful lot to bring to the table, and you know it.4. Grab their attention with humor.Thank you very much for offering me the manager position at Buzzfeed Im more than willing to accept. Alright, I know we arent there yet. But, if we were, here are fifteen reasons why Id be a wonderful team manager and player.Maybe you dont like to brag. If you dont know how to write a passionate introduction, and youre really not sure what to do try using humor. You shouldnt tell an outright joke. That can get very cheesy, very fast. But try to be playful with your introduction.5. Open with a famous quote.Ghandi once said, Be the change you wish to see in the world. Well, actually, he said something much longer than that which was later translated to be the popular quote we know and love today. But he wasnt wrong. Im ready to make a change in the world through knowledge of our past which is why Im applying for the historian position at the Carnegie Library. It can be corny, opening with a famous quote. But it can also highlight your level of intelligence assuming, of course, that you dont choose a household quote that everyone and their grandmother already knows. If you pick something interesting that actually ties into the rest of your letter, it will be an asset rather than a mistake.6. Speak as if youve already been hired. When I ran across this job opening last week, I knew I had to apply. Ive been waiting for an opportunity to prove myself as a writer, and it looks like this is it. Not only do you have amazing clients, but the mission of your company matches closely with my personal mission. Together, I think we can do some pretty great things. This tactic just makes your letter easier to write. Youre not being too self-centered. Youre just being confident. When it comes to your resume and cover letter, confidence is key. Its not something that you should be ashamed of and, if done correctly, this particular strategy will be seamless. Your potential employer wont even realize that you used it7. Keep your introduction short and sweet.Writing can be prosperous when its done correctly. Let me show you what my writing experience can do for your company.Well keep the explanation short and sweet, a s well. Employers like to-the-point attitudes.8. Use numbers to make a point.Eighteen basketball players. Six coaches. Two producers. One college president. These are the ingredients for a quality team, but youre missing one important flavor a manager. Luckily, I can help you there.Especially for managerial positions, using numbers in your introduction can show that you know what youre talking about. You shouldnt pull these numbers from nowhere they should be well-researched and used carefully. But its always a good idea to show off your knowledge of the craft. In this example, the applicant is showing off their knowledge of a particular basketball team. The result is smooth and collected.9. Be painstakingly honest. When I was five years old, I smashed my head through our front door during a particularly bad temper tantrum. Since then, Ive learned about mold and cheap wood and how neither of those things belonged in our mysteriously affordable Victorian home. This, and other perso nal experiences, leads me to believe that Im a great fit for the team manager position at Oswald Construction. This is about as close as you can get to making an actual joke in your cover letter. Play at the readers sense of humor. This is your opportunity to share a funny story or something embarrassing about yourself. Dont be afraid to be honest, even when it hurts. Youre showing your potential employer that youre capable of poking fun at yourself, and learning from the experience.10. Consider making a video.Weve provided examples for the rest of our tips, but weve simply going to provide a URL for this one. To check out Graeme Anthony (an up-and-coming PR practitioner) and his online cover letter, click here.Going the technological route makes you look media-savvy and creative. It also takes a certain level of independence and time management to create a professional, but intriguing, video that doesnt completely lose the attention of your audience halfway through.
